Important News
At the North Brookfield Town meeting June 23, 2006 the Board of Health Budget
was cut severely. The salaries for staff at the Recycling/Transfer Station
were cut in half. The selectmen were advocating at that meeting that we
close the facility one day a week. All of our vendors that pick-up
recyclables, used clothes, tires, and computers, used oil etc. only work on
weekdays. North Brookfield is scheduled for pickup on Wednesdays. Many of
our residents cannot come on Saturdays or prefer to avoid the crowd on
Saturdays by using the facility on Wednesdays. The Board of Health has tried
to come up with the best solution for the operation of the facility under
this budget cut hoping that the money will be put returned to our budget as
soon as the Town is able.
Effective Wednesday, July 5th the North Brookfield Recycling/Transfer Station
will be open for only half the day on Wednesdays from 7:00AM until
12:00PM and one hour less on Saturdays from 8:00AM until 5:00PM. We have also
had to end employment of one full time staff person on Saturdays.
Due to this lack of staff we will also have to close the Take-It-Or-Leave-It
Shed. This is a very popular asset of our facility we hate to close it but
it costs the Town money to monitor and clean up each week. It is hard to
know how much gets reused and saved from disposal through the shed. We think
enough is reused to warrant reopening it when we have the staff time and
money.
We are sorry for the inconvenience this causes and hope you will help our
staff get through this tough time and help us convince the Selectmen that
our budget should be returned to normal as soon as funds are available. This
is especially true for the Recycling /Transfer Station because the yellow
bag fees, sticker fees and demolition fees collected at the facility go into
the general fund to pay for the operation of the facility. Currently these
fees are enough to pay for the operation as we are used to seeing it two
days a week.
Hazardous Waste Collection Days
The town of North Brookfield will
be hosting paint and hazardous waste collection days at the Brookfields Regional
Paint Collection Facility on East Brookfield Road, North Brookfield. The
entrance is next to Chase Precast, and the exit is the same as the North
Brookfield Transfer/Recycling Facility.
Hazardous Waste collection
days are June 2, 2007 and September 29, 2007, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
This is free to all residents of the Brookfields and Spencer. Residents of the
he Towns of New Braintree and Oakham are welcome to participate in this
collection, but they must pay for disposal costs. For 5 gallons or less of
ordinary household hazardous waste, the charge is $20. From 5 - 10 gallons, the
charge is $40. For hazardous waste costing more than $4 per gallon for disposal,
the chemist running the collection will decide the cost to be paid by the
resident.
