    This overview of the library expansion was provided by Butler Bennett Architects Inc., the architect company that also provided the blueprints and the plans that are in the library right now.

Library Design Issues
 

Replanning for a 9,000 SF Library Facility:

    -  Entry area allowing easy visual orientation for patrons
    -  'Command post' circulation desk near main entry
    -  Vertical circulation core for easy access to all areas of the library
    -  Separation of active / quiet and child / adult areas
    -  Special acoustic area for social interaction, public information, and exhibits
    -  Contiguous shelving areas for collection and other media
    -  Adequate table and lounge seats for patrons
    -  Tutoring and homework center monitored from staff position
    -  Adequate work areas for administration and technical services
    -  After-hours accessible Community Meeting Room
    -  Children's Room for expanded collection, and programs
    -  Children's Room visually divided by age group

Handicapped Access:

    -  Full building access for all patrons and staff
    -  Vertical circulation
    -  Horizontal circulation clearance within stacks
    -  Convenient public toilets
    -  Accessible 'main' entrance
    -  Site access and adequate accessible parking

Building Renovation and Expansion:

    -  Enhance quality and features of existing library
    -  Provide durable finishes and furnishings for limited maintenance
    -  Adequate day lighting for staff work spaces
    -  Electrical upgrade and flexible communications infrastructure
    -  Mechanical systems upgrade, temperature and humidity controls
    -  'User-friendly' systems controls

Site Design:

    - Ensure expansion allows appropriate separation of functions
    - Adequate staff and patron parking
    - Appropriate 'civic' landscaping design
