North Brookfield Downtown Development Project (NBDDP)*The Town of North Brookfield recently secured a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to help clean up a portion of the vacant site in the center of town. The cleanup will be focused on the 10 Grove Street portion of the area formerly known as Aztec Industries, consisting also of the 55 School Street and 14 South Common Street parcels (5.9 acres total), and now referred to collectively as the North Brookfield Downtown Development Project (NBDDP). The former site was abandoned by Aztec Industries in the 1980s and has remained in that condition ever since, mostly due to the existence of contaminants (asbestos) in the soil. The purpose of this specific cleanup grant is cover the asbestos soil located within the 10 Grove Street parcel with an engineered cap, or barrier. Overall, the objective is to market the site for redevelopment into a new and useful property that provides services, employment, and tax benefits for the Town. *This page has been added to the North Brookfield site to keep citizens abreast of the issues regarding the cleanup of the Aztec Property. Information on this page will be useful both to residents who are unaware of this project and to residents who want access to news about the property. Also, there is a repository of information available for review at the Selectmen’s office on Main Street. *At present, the following links contain several sources of information about the NBDDP. Please check back periodically to obtain more current information as it is made available. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance reading or understanding these documents, please contact the Selectmen’s office.
