Safety Committee Message - October 2005

October is National Fire Safety Time

Did you know that the third overall cause of unintentional injury deaths at home is caused by fires and burns? The very young and very old are most often the groups facing the most risk of injury.

Now is the time to help protect yourself against these statistics by taking a few pro-active steps in your household. Below are some useful hints to protect you regarding fire prevention and preparedness.

PREVENTION:

bullet

Smoke detectors should be on every level of your household. The best locations are usually just outside of sleeping areas.

bullet

Detector Batteries should be checked monthly and replaced bi-annually. When you Fall back and Spring forward, think about replacing your batteries.

bullet

Fire Extinguishers should be available and located near sources of fire or open sparks. The Kitchen, Furnace room, garage, shed, etc are all excellent locations for an all purpose extinguisher.

bullet

Don’t overload electrical sources and check for frayed wiring. Electrical sparks can quickly turn into an inferno. On average a regular fire protected sofa turns into a raging inferno in less than 30 seconds of burn time and can be caused by a simple constant spark like a burning cigarette or exposed wire.

bullet

Never smoke in bed or when tired.

bullet

Keep scented candles and matches out of reach of young children.

bullet

Properly dispose of materials from a fire place or wood burning stove.

PREPAREDNESS:

bullet

Have a plan and practice it !!  Have everyone in your family review evacuation routes in case of a fire. Have a family drill annually to ensure everyone knows their routes.

bullet

Keep the 911 and all other emergency numbers posted near all telephones including cordless phones and home fax machines

bullet

If you have young children teach them to “STOP, DROP and ROLL should they ever catch on fire.
